Special Needs - “Thumbs Up Soccer”
Thumbs-Up Soccer is a program for children with special needs. This was one of the first Club-sponsored special needs programs in Ontario. It started more than 10 years ago.

Who is Eligible for This Program?
The program accepts players who are 8 - 18 years old. Younger players may also be accepted on an individual basis. Generally, they would qualify to participate in a Special Olympics program but others will be considered as well. They must be physically capable of participating without any serious medical condition that would put them at risk. A medical information / release form must be submitted with the registration form.

How does the Program Operate?
The program is operated by volunteers. We do not expect parents to act as mentors. The Club finds volunteer mentors who work with the players. The ratio of playes to mentors is intentionally kept very low (1:1 or close to it). The players are given individual attention and instruction that is appropriate for their abilities. There is generally a scrimmage at the end of the session that includes most of the players.

Given the wide age range, players are divided into groups according to age (and to a lesser degree by ability). It is intended to be fun while exposing them to some skills development and some team play. It allows them to develop over time without any undue pressure or expectations. Since they get individual attention, each is able to participate and develop at their own pace.

Where and When Does Thumbs-Up Take Place?
The program runs from February 13, 2011 to May 8, 2011 in the Mount Joy Indoor Soccer Facility.  The sessions are one hour long and they are scheduled again this year on Sunday afternoons between 3:00pm and 5:00pm. There is a registration fee for the program.

Expectation of Parents / Guardians
A Parent or Guardian must remain at the field during each session. This obviously makes the players more comfortable and it provides immediate support if an issue should arise.
