The U9 Lightning Girls competed in Lake Simcoe September 11/12. This tournament was characterized by high quality opposition in a 10 team field. Our Lightning girls were the only unbeaten team in the round robin victorious in hardly fought contests against the Whitby Iroquois Lightning, Newmarket United Red, and the Oshawa Kicks Attack. They finished 1st in the standings ahead of Vaughan , Lake Simcoe , and Newmarket White. This set up a very exciting semi final against Newmarket White. The game was scoreless at the half, and ended 2 -2. Inevitably penalty kicks would decide the outcome with the Lightning girls winning with a one goal advantage. The final was a classic against the very capable and strong Vaughan Azzurri Chargers. The Lightning girls took the early lead 1 - 0, and dominated ball control for much of the game. To their credit, the Vaughan girls fought back and evened the score in the early part of the second half. The game ended in a tie and went to penalty kicks. It was tied after 5 shooters, and went to sudden death, where the Vaughan team prevailed. We could not be more proud of the girls for their effort and accomplishment. Special thanks to Coaches George Filntissis, and Angelo Pasqualito for taking the team to the finals in our third consecutive tournament.
