U18 Girls 'Three-Peats' at Unionville Tournament!

The Markham Hornets Under-18 Girls House League All-Star team won the Unionville-Milliken S.C. All-Star/Select Tournament on the August 28-29 week-end for the third year in a row. This year, the team found itself in the Women's Open division of the tournament with two other U18 all-star teams (Unionville-Milliken and Erin Mills) and two women's teams from Unionville-Milliken.

The Hornets kicked off Saturday’s four-game round robin with a convincing 3-0 win over the UMSC U18 team. Oriana Paoletti, Rachel Tam, and Vanessa Santolin scored the Markham goals, while guest player Megan Locker earned the shut-out. The next game was a scoreless tie against Erin Mills, with Locker again earning a shut-out. In their third game, Markham beat the UMSC All-Star women's team 1-0, with Locker running her shut-out streak to three games and Santolin scoring the game's lone goal. This clinched a place in the final, so the team let down a little in a meaningless fourth game, losing to the U-MSC Strikers women's team 2-0.

The championship final against Erin Mills on Sunday was another tight battle, just like Saturday's scoreless draw. Tori Hood broke the deadlock 17 minutes into the first half, finishing a nice cross from Alana Gottschalk, and that was all the Hornets needed, as Locker and her strong defense recorded their fourth shut-out of the tournament. This was the only goal scored against Erin Mills in the whole tournament, but it was enough to give the team its third UMSC tournament title in a row, having won the U18 division in 2008 and 2009. Locker was named the MVP of the championship final game. Other members of the team were Michelle Addorisio, Katherine Burnett, Victoria Christofilos, Natalie Cramarossa, Rebecca Hood, Jill Kooymans, Ashley Korey, Emily Locker, Kristen McCulloch, Rysha Schuler, Rosanna Tamburro, and Sadie Vanier. The team was coached by Jerry Kooymans and Carmen and Anthony Addorisio and is sponsored by CIBC.
