The Markham Under-18 Girls House League All-Star team was the only undefeated team in the five-team U18 division of the Barrie All-Star Soccer Challenge on the August 29-30 week-end, but the team’s record of one win and three ties in the round robin was only good enough for third place and did not advance them into the championship final. The Hornets, playing with only two substitutes and without their regular goalkeeper on Saturday, still managed to hold the Barrie and Owen Sound teams to 2-2 and 1-1 ties. Victoria Christofilos converted a Justine Cleworth corner kick, and Michelle Addorisio slotted home a pass from Alyssa Paoletti in the first game, while Meera Haji scored the lone goal in the second game. The roster grew even thinner for the two Sunday games, with only one sub available for the game against the Nor’West Rebels from London and none for the game against Waterloo United. After falling behind 1-0 to Nor’West in the first half of a must-win game, the Hornets showed tremendous character by playing their best half of the tournament. Haji tied the game in the first minute of the second half with a penalty kick, but the Londoners restored their lead only three minutes later. Then Alana Gottschalk caught fire, heading in a perfect Cleworth corner kick with 20 minutes to go, followed two minutes later by her second goal, which stood up as the winner in a 3-2 thriller. Needing another victory to advance to the final, the 11 Hornets threw their heart and soul into their last round robin game and very nearly pulled it off. They allowed a heart-breaking goal by Waterloo with only 10 seconds left in the first half but once again showed their resilience, as they continually applied pressure until they were rewarded with 9 minutes left in the game, as Cleworth scored directly from a corner kick. Unfortunately that was all the scoring they could manage, despite numerous chances, and the 1-1 tie left them one point behind Barrie and Waterloo, who each managed two wins, one loss, and one tie. Nonetheless, all of the girls can hold their heads up high for this very impressive performance. Also contributing to the team's effort were: Natalie Cramarossa, Rachel Tam, Frederique Rajotte, Michelle Kwok, Michelle Pacelli, Natalie Mangos, Victoria Hood, and Jill Kooymans. The team was coached by Jerry Kooymans and Carmen Addorisio, and is sponsored by CIBC. Last changed: Sep 23 2009 at 12:45 PM Back
