The Markham Hornets Under-18 Girls House League All-Star team made it all the way to the finals of the Thornhill Thunder International Challenge Cup rep tournament on the August 21-22 week-end before losing a soggy championship final game.

The Hornets edged North Mississauga 1-0 in their first round robin game, with Natalie Cramarossa scoring the game’s lone goal and Bryanna Lundie recording the shut-out.

Markham was shocked by a Kitchener goal in the first two minutes of their second game, but they bounced back to equalize with another goal by Cramarossa with 7 minutes left in the game.

The third game against Owen Sound ended in a scoreless tie, with Lundie recording another shut-out.

The Hornets faced Owen Sound again Sunday morning in a semi-final game played under atrocious conditions, with pouring rain and half the field covered in ankle-deep mud. Once again they found themselves behind when their opponents scored at 18 minutes of the first half. Markham roared right back and Cramarossa scored her third goal of the tournament two minutes later to tie it up at 1-1. With both teams repeatedly slipping and falling in the mud and the rain not letting up, it looked like the game was headed to overtime when Michelle Addorisio scored with less than a minute left in the game to send an elated Markham team into the finals.

The conditions did not improve for the championship game against Sudbury Panhellenic Lightning. The rain returned shortly after the game started, and there were large puddles in front of both goals that stopped the ball dead repeated times. Somehow the Sudbury team managed a shot on goal that wasn’t stopped by the puddles or Lundie, and that was enough to give them a 1-0 victory. This time the Hornets couldn’t bounce back, and they had to settle for the Finalist trophies, a tremendous accomplishment nonetheless.

Other members of the team were Katherine Burnett, Victoria Christofilos, Alana Gottschalk, Rebecca Hood, Tori Hodd, Jill Kooymans, Ashley Korey, Emily Locker, Kristen McCulloch, Oriana Paoletti, Vanessa Santolin, Rysha Schuler, Rachel Tam, Rosanna Tamburro, and Sadie Vanier. The team was coached by Jerry Kooymans and Carmen and Anthony Addorisio and is sponsored by CIBC.
