On Aug 22/23rd week end our U18 All-Star boy's team went out determined to finish off their tournament season on a positive note and they got their wish. Wow, did they every get their wish ! They not only won their 3rd straight tournament, but managed to do it without any goals against. What a tremendous accomplishment. The parents and supporters got a thrill of a lifetime watching this finely tuned machine completely shut down the opposition with a positive winning attitude and a great show of sportsmanship all around. Congratulations boys !!
In summary, the boys had good control of each match throughout the round robin games.
Game 1 was against Toronto High Park FC. We managed to breeze by the first game with a 3-0 victory.
Game 2 was against Holsag Furniture, an out of town team. Some of us parents just watched this team tie our rivals, Mississauga 2-2 on the other field and we thought we were in for a challenge. As the game wore on, our boys must have found the goalie's weakness as they pounded the net for a 6 - 0 victory. Chris Blanco managed to get a couple of the six goals. David Slaman looked unstoppable controlling the ball like it was tied to his foot with a string, not to mention, the entire team looked great as well.
Game 3 was against our rivals, Mississauga. This team has heart and a lot of perseverance. They did their best to try and knock off the reigning champs but we were too much for them. Matthew Coates was the dominating force in this game scoring 2 of the 4 goals to help us win this game 4-0.
Now came the final match. To our 'non surprise' we were facing, yes you guessed it, Mississauga! Unlike the other final matches with this team, this time they came prepared with a full roster, and them some. It was 0-0 after the first half and they were even dominating us, keeping the ball in our end for most of the fist half. Sounds like a challenge, but our boys did not give up and even stepped it up a notch. In the second half their goalie gave us a break which I'm sure the won't forget for a while. He seemed to mishandle the ball on a forceful drive from Kevin Vaneziano. It popped out of his hands and Anthony Karas was there anxiously waiting close by. Anthony quickly jammed into the net past their goalie to give us a 1-0 lead. Mississauga was stunned. Later in the half we were fortunate to receive a free kick around the mid field mark. All the forwards lined up preparing for the kick. It was if they could taste the upcoming victory. The kick was high and came down hard just in front of the line of players. As the goalie was preparing to jump up to meet the oncoming ball, Anthony Karas came out of nowhere and headed the ball just slightly over the fingertips of their goalie. The ball trickled into the net as all the Mississauga players watched helplessly. Their heads bowed in disbelief as if they came the to painstaking conclusion that they were done for the day. There was a bit more time on the clock but in the end, we completed this championship final game with a decisive 2-0 victory.
Congratulations to a well fitted conclusion in an amazing journey for these gifted All-Stars. This is one season not one of these young lads will forget.
A special mention for the unbelievable accomplishment to our goalie and hero, Juliano Romangnuolo, for getting this prestigious and rare tournament shut out. Well done, Juliano !
