Our U18 Boys Markham Hornets pulled off a series of very exciting wins to eventually win the Cambridge All-Star Tournament on the week-end of July 11 - 12, 2009. Not only did the boys get a chance to show off their great skill and ball control, they managed to win all their games and were only scored upon once! Kudos to our goalie, Juliano Romagnuolo, who almost received a perfect shut-out. Game 1 was delayed due to a torrential downpour which had the tournament organizers worried. After waiting it out to dry, we started our first game against our long-time rivals, Mississauga. Last year we were 1 and 1 with them over two tournaments. This year we made no mistake and took them 3-0 in the first of three round robin games. All the boys played great. Marcus Miller kept them guessing with his fancy foot work, and Juliano stunned them with his first shut-out of the tournament.
Game 2 was against the host team, Cambridge. This game got a bit chippy from the start. It got a bit wild when Anthony Karas scored his second goal on an aggressive header just before the goalie was able to snatch it. Their team never recovered from this. We put in the third and final goal from a decisive penalty shot guided by Kevin Veneziano's foot. Wow, what a finish! Another 3-0 victory and Juliano's second shut out. Game 3 against Erin Mills was tough and very close. Adam Murphy squeaked in the only goal of the game with minutes left to play. Yes, and of course, Juliano was able to get his third shut-out of the tournament. We made it to the finals against our rival Mississauga team. Unfortunately for them we were on a tremendous high from our previous win – they did not stand a chance. We easily beat them 4-1 but, as luck would have it for them, they we able to score once, which blew Juliano's total tournament shut-out. Oh well, we'll give it to them, they deserved it. Congratulations on your incredible decisive win: Justin Barreto, Jordan Bedi, Christopher Blanco, Michael Daniels, Anthony Karas, Markus Miller, Adam Murphy, Ben Murphy, Scott Murphy, Mark Palomo, Michael Reid, Juliano Romagnuolo, Richard Ruffolo, David Slaman, Aaron Styba, Kevin Veneziano, with coach John Slaman and manager Elaine Veneziano. by Sam Karas Last changed: Sep 09 2009 at 2:04 PM Back
