The Lightning U17 Girls had a difficult challenge in the Ontario Cup Final taking on the top OYSL Girls Team, the Ajax United Magic. The Lightning Girls finished third in the CGSL, just 2 points out of first place while the Ajax team are a former National Silver Medalist and the Ontario Youth Soccer League winner this year. On paper, the Ajax team should have had a relatively easy time of it but the Lightning Girls gave them a good game and made it an interesting one to watch. Markham was down by 2 at the half. Four minutes into the second half, Kelly Bishop got a goal for the Lightning from a free kick and there was some renewed hope. Ajax came back quickly and got another goal to make it 3 - 1 and that was it for the goals. It is worth noting that this is the first Markham team to appear in back-to-back Indoor and Outdoor finals for the Ontario Cup. Congratulations to the team for a great performance.
